The Chaos Theory

This is a blog about the sudden increase in the prevalence of chaos in our daily lives, it is an inescapable fact of modern living and one over which we seemingly have no control, we are all just like free form collections of atoms spinning out of control, bouncing and colliding with each other randomly and all too often often the victims of inevitable, inexplicable forces over which we have no control….

It is not necessarily meant to be confused by the mathematical model of the chaos theory as proposed by scientist Ian McDonald, portrayed so brilliantly by Jeff Goldblum in the movie Jurassic Park, although he too was grasping for an explanation, a mathematical model of predictability…..This is a complex scientific issue , and I am no scientist, but as best as I can understand it, according to my Google sources, chaos theory is explained as a new non linear model of scientific thinking debunking the former Newtonian model of certainty, linearity, and predictability…

In other words, anything goes!…It is in the most simple terms like saying that anything can happen to anyone at any time, without there being any rhyme or reason to it….In a sense, it has always been like that, but it seems more so now than ever…Chaos theory cuts across all fields, from mathematics to economics to natural sciences….There are increasing numbers of seemingly random, unconnected events from all across the world that seem to have no connection to each other, but they are all connected and can be explained by the chaos theory…

We experience this every day in our normal lives…. Cars break down on the freeway, or there is some idiot that cuts us off while we are driving and this then causes a massive chain reaction accident…. Appliances at home mysteriously all seem to stop working for no apparent reason… People that we thought that we knew well are suddenly off and into doing strange new things, it seems like the old systems of predictability and the comfort of routine no longer exist…

We are all strangers in a strange land, where the moral values of one generation seem warped and hopelessly outdated to the newer generations, where the concepts, values and core beliefs of our society are suddenly being assaulted, flaunted and challenged at every turn….And it is true, it is happening every day in every way imaginable on the social and personal level too….

In an effort to define the indefinable, the scientists are more and more embracing the “chaos theory” which is a scientific cop out to me, because it seems that they don’t know what the hell is going on either… But in simple terms, for ordinary people like me and you, it seems that there are no longer any “givens” that we can truly count on, no unchanging rules, no guiding principles or sound structure for social interaction that we can cling to for stability and comfort…

For a good example, just look at the wild weather patterns that have become so suddenly prevalent in the last several years…There are record droughts in California, extremely frigid winters in Boston, New York and the entire east coast, there are hurricanes and tornadoes of unprecedented ferocity along the coastal states…

There are massive tsunamis and unprecedented, unexpected volcanic activity throughout the world in areas that have been stable for centuries, there are floods and extreme heat in areas of the world that have never experienced them before…This can all be only explained by the chaos theory, although it is my personal opinion that the greenhouse gas emissions are a huge factor in the chaotic weather patterns we have all been experiencing…

In our own personal lives, people are discarding traditional role models at an alarming rate…. The marriage rate is plummeting while the divorce rate is soaring, and people are breaking up and forming new interpersonal types of bonding that have never existed before….There is no certainty, there is no predictability anywhere, anything can happen to anybody at any time…In this suddenly upside down world I feel like Alice must have felt when she went through the looking glass, because nothing is as it seems and everything is different than it first appears….

What can we do about it? Apparently nothing, as even the scientists, the so called experts can not predict the unpredictable, although they are groping for mathematical models and principles to guide them in a futile attempt to a more clear understanding of what is going on, they are striving mightily to comprehend the incomprehensible……And yet these strange new phenomena seem to be happening at a more and more alarming frequency every day…How do you define the undefinable?

So I guess all that we can do on a personal level is just roll with the punches, and expect the unexpected at all times…The whole world is changing, both on the grand scale of planetary weather conditions and on the more personal, intimate scale of our own daily domestic lives….

As the famous baseball pitcher Satchel Paige once said, “Don’t look back, something might be gaining on you.”

Just leave it like it is right now
