The World Of Sports/East Coast Media Bias

Giants 2014 World SeriesGiants World Series Parade 2014

The world of sports is an all encompassing, year round source of enjoyment for some people, a distraction for others, and a downright annoyance and inconvenience to many non sports fans who couldn’t care less about any televised sports…I personally am a confirmed sports junkie, and I watch every single home town team game…..Since I live in San Francisco, that means that I am a Giants fan, a Warriors fan, and a 49ers fan…..But where is my media coverage?

Life is good for a sports fan in San Francisco lately, and despite the well known and really difficult to comprehend East coast media bias against the West coast, we sports fans on the West coast have been living high off the hog lately…I personally think this East coast media bias is caused primarily, I think, because of the 3 hour time difference, but the proof is in the pudding and the sports media like Sports Illustrated seldom follows my local teams and favorite athletes closely enough to satisfy me…

For whatever reasons, murky as they may be, there is definitely an East coast bias toward the West coast teams……Like I said, I do believe it is probably because our night baseball and basketball games that usually start here at 730 don’t even begin until 10:30 in New York, for example, or anywhere on the East coast, and that most people, including sports writers are unable to watch the games in full since they seldom are completed until like 1 am or later East coast time….

This is truly a shame, because they are missing some of the best sports action in several years, quality athletes in their prime delivering the goods night after night, as our West coast teams have been consistently winning conference championships and advancing to the playoffs year after year, and I will include my hated rivals, the Los Angeles Dodgers, who won the NL West baseball title last year in this category, although the San Francisco Giants qualified as a wild card and won the World Series again last year in 2014….

I sincerely hope it is nothing more sinister than that, although many of my friends are convinced that there is a definite bias against all the West coast teams in general by the Eastern media….This conspiracy theory advances the point of view that the East coast writers feel that the Eastern teams, like the New York Yankees, the Boston Red Sox, the New York Giants or New England Patriots football team are inherently tougher, stronger, and superior to the West coast teams on every level…..

This of course is sheer nonsense! Anybody truly following the progress of the West coast teams lately cannot help but note the fact that my beloved San Francisco Giants baseball team has won THREE World series in the last 5 years, in 2010, 2012, and 2014…. Or that the Golden State Warriors basketball team won 67 regular season games this year and are the favorites in most circles to win the NBA crown this year; they are one victory away from advancing to the NBA Western Conference finals as they lead the Memphis Grizzlies 3-2 in their current series…..

Last year was an off year for the 49er’s football team…. I will admit, 8-8 is simply not acceptable, but in the 4 years prior to last year the San Francisco 49er’s were not only in the playoffs every year, they were in the NFC championship game every year and played in the Super Bowl one year…The 49er’s are currently trying to rebuild this year to recapture the glory of the Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Ronnie Lott and Steve Young led teams that established a football dynasty that could not be ignored….

These Hall of Fame players won consistently throughout the 1980s and into the 1990’s making the playoffs nearly every year and won 5 Super Bowls, in 1982, 1985, 1989 AND 1990 (back to back) and once again in 1995….True, the San Francisco 49er’s did lose their only Super Bowl in current times, losing to the Baltimore Ravens in 2013, but I never said we were perfect, just very, very good…

And speaking of any East coast media bias, even the Eastern scribes must grudgingly acknowledge the fact that for the last several years, nearly ALL of the Eastern Division basketball teams are far inferior to their Western Division counterparts…The disparity is so great that there is strong sentiment to do away with the time honored format of the traditional East vs West basketball rivalry and just have the basketball playoffs based on won lost records, irrespective of divisions!…

I hope that there is no real conspiracy, no actual East coast media bias against the West coast teams, because sports should transcend such pettiness….The joy of watching highly skilled athletes in their prime should be shared by the whole country, even if they are on the West coast…

There will always be, just for me and sports fans like me, that supreme thrill, that sheer adrenaline rush of excitement and gratification of watching, mostly on TV but occasionally live at the stadium venues, at least once a year, and being able to fully appreciate the skill sets of these professional athletes…..They are performing amazing athletic feats in the sports that I grew up with, baseball, basketball and football, and just observing and realizing how they consistently make the most difficult plays look so effortless and easy makes watching sports for me never grow old….

Like I said, I am a confirmed sports junkie and just wish the Eastern media would give us our props! If they took an unbiased look, they would soon realize that the West coast has as many star athletes as anywhere else in the country….Including their beloved venerable East coast teams!…
